Federal Skill Trade Program (FSTP)

FSTP-Federal Skill Trade Program

Federal Skilled Trade Program was launched in 2013 by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). This program is managed by the Government’s Express Entry System. Applying through the FSTP is one of many ways you can pursue immigration to Canada as a skilled trades professional. FSTP is major effort of Federal and Provincial Governments. Canada has aging population with low birth rate, and they have a major dependency on immigration to support their economic growth. It is important to note that candidates for the Federal Skilled Trades Program can usually be chosen on a broad basis if they have a high Comprehensive Ranking Score (CRS).

Eligibility Criteria for FSTP

  • Have valid job offer (LMIA approved) of continuous, paid, full-time employment from up to 2 employers for at least one year in Canada.
  • 2 years of full-time work experience in the skilled trade in the last five years before applying.
  • Applicant must have a proof of basic language proficiency from the language testing organization Canadian Level Benchmark (CLB) 5 for speaking and listening, CLB 4 for reading and writing.
  • Meet all job requirements for that skilled trade according to the NOC (except for provincial certificate)

A certificate of qualification which proves that foreign national can work in Canada in the skilled trade. Also, person has passed a certification exam to meet all the requirements of a province or territory.

For FSTP, skilled trades are organized under some groups of the NOC as following-

• Group 72 – construction, electrical, and industrial sectors.
• Group 73 – maintenance or equipment operations.
• Group 82 – technical jobs in agriculture, natural resources, or related field.
• Group 92 – manufacturing or processing supervisory role, or operators.
• Group 632 – cooks or chefs.
• Group 633 – bakers, butchers.
